You'll need an amplifier

These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier to power them (6Ω, 45–180W recommended). Either of these will drive a pair and stream music from your phone.

Need a fire hood?

If the ceiling has a bedroom or other living space above it, or is part of an escape route, building regulations require each speaker to have a fire hood. Hoods also cut sound leaking into the room above.

Need speaker cable?

Allow about 10m per speaker for a typical run back to the amplifier. Webro 16/2 LSZH (low smoke, zero halogen) is the right cable for runs in ceilings and walls.

The Monitor Audio C3M is a premium three-way in-ceiling speaker designed for larger living spaces, home cinemas and dedicated listening rooms where sound quality cannot be compromised. Its sophisticated driver array brings genuine hi-fi performance to a flush-mounted ceiling format, making it a superb choice for anyone wanting serious audio without visible speakers.

Why we like it

  • Three-way design with dedicated bass, midrange and tweeter drivers delivers genuinely full-range sound
  • RDT III bass cone provides deep, controlled low end with low distortion
  • IDC II mid-pod array and UD Waveguide II tweeter ensure accurate imaging and wide, even dispersion
  • On-board Corner, HF and MF switches let installers tailor the sound to the room acoustics
  • Quik-Link connectors and Tri-Grip II fixings speed up installation and keep it secure long-term

Installation notes

The C3M requires a 212mm cut-out and a mounting depth of 148mm, so it's best suited to ceilings with adequate void space - check joist spacing before cutting. A pre-construction bracket (CM-B) is available for new-build projects. For amplification, pair with a dedicated multi-channel AV amp or a stereo power amp capable of delivering the recommended 45-180W RMS into 8 ohms; a Sonos Amp or WiiM Amp Pro will comfortably drive a pair in everyday listening, though dedicated hi-fi amplification will extract the most detail from this speaker's capability.

Questions we get asked

Does it come with a grille?
Yes. Every ceiling and in-wall speaker we sell comes with its grille in the box. Manufacturer photos often show the speaker with the grille removed so you can see the drivers, but the grille is always included.
Will it fit my ceiling?
You'll need a 212mm cut-out and at least 148mm of depth behind the ceiling surface. The visible trim is 242mm across. Standard plasterboard ceilings with joists are usually fine; check for pipes, cables and insulation before cutting. Not sure? Send us a photo or plan and we'll check it for you.
Do I need an amplifier?
Yes. These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier or AV receiver to drive them. They're rated at 6Ω with 45–180W recommended amplifier power. For most rooms a Sonos Amp or WiiM Amp is ideal: each drives a pair and streams from your phone. You can also buy a package with the amp included and save 5%.
Do I need a fire hood?
If there's a habitable room above (for example a bedroom), or the ceiling forms part of a fire escape route, Building Regulations require each speaker to be fire-rated, usually with a fire hood fitted over the back. The hood that fits this speaker is shown above, next to Add to cart. Hoods also cut sound travelling to the room above. See all fire hoods.
How many speakers do I need?
As a rule of thumb: a pair for most bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms up to about 20m², two pairs for large open-plan spaces, and a single stereo speaker (T2 / stereo models) for small rooms like en-suites. For home cinema, use 5 or 7 speakers plus a subwoofer. Our free design service will plan positions and sizes from your floorplan.
Can I return it?
Yes. Unused items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, and every product carries the full manufacturer warranty. Returns & warranty.
