You'll need an amplifier

These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier to power them (8Ω, 40–150W recommended). Either of these will drive a pair and stream music from your phone.

Need a fire hood?

If the ceiling has a bedroom or other living space above it, or is part of an escape route, building regulations require each speaker to have a fire hood. Hoods also cut sound leaking into the room above.

Need speaker cable?

Allow about 10m per speaker for a typical run back to the amplifier. Webro 16/2 LSZH (low smoke, zero halogen) is the right cable for runs in ceilings and walls.

The Monitor Audio C1L is a large-format in-ceiling speaker designed for anyone who wants genuine high-fidelity sound without a premium price tag. Its substantial 9" mid-bass driver makes it particularly well suited to bigger rooms such as open-plan kitchens, living areas, home cinemas and commercial spaces like shops, offices and restaurants where background music needs real presence and depth.

Why we like it

  • Powerful 9" C-CAM mid-bass driver delivers extended, authoritative bass
  • 1.25" C-CAM tweeter adds detailed, controlled high frequencies
  • Wide 30Hz-25kHz frequency response for a genuinely full-range performance
  • Quik-Link connector makes wiring fast and tool-free
  • Tri-Grip II mounting system ensures a stable, rattle-free installation

Installation notes

The C1L requires a 248mm cut-out and a mounting depth of 99mm, so check loft or ceiling void clearance before installing. A pre-construction bracket (CL-B) is available for new-build projects. Given its 75W power handling and 8 ohm nominal impedance, the C1L pairs well with a dedicated multi-room amplifier such as a Sonos Amp or a WiiM Amp for streamed background music, or with a traditional AV receiver in home cinema applications. The supplied paintable round grille allows it to blend into any ceiling colour scheme.

Questions we get asked

Does it come with a grille?
Yes. Every ceiling and in-wall speaker we sell comes with its grille in the box. Manufacturer photos often show the speaker with the grille removed so you can see the drivers, but the grille is always included.
Will it fit my ceiling?
You'll need a 248mm cut-out and at least 99mm of depth behind the ceiling surface. The visible trim is 278mm across. Standard plasterboard ceilings with joists are usually fine; check for pipes, cables and insulation before cutting. Not sure? Send us a photo or plan and we'll check it for you.
Do I need an amplifier?
Yes. These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier or AV receiver to drive them. They're rated at 8Ω with 40–150W recommended amplifier power. For most rooms a Sonos Amp or WiiM Amp is ideal: each drives a pair and streams from your phone. You can also buy a package with the amp included and save 5%.
Do I need a fire hood?
If there's a habitable room above (for example a bedroom), or the ceiling forms part of a fire escape route, Building Regulations require each speaker to be fire-rated, usually with a fire hood fitted over the back. The hood that fits this speaker is shown above, next to Add to cart. Hoods also cut sound travelling to the room above. See all fire hoods.
How many speakers do I need?
As a rule of thumb: a pair for most bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms up to about 20m², two pairs for large open-plan spaces, and a single stereo speaker (T2 / stereo models) for small rooms like en-suites. For home cinema, use 5 or 7 speakers plus a subwoofer. Our free design service will plan positions and sizes from your floorplan.
Can I return it?
Yes. Unused items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, and every product carries the full manufacturer warranty. Returns & warranty.
