You'll need an amplifier
These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier to power them (8Ω, 20–100W recommended). Either of these will drive a pair and stream music from your phone.
Need a fire hood?
If the ceiling has a bedroom or other living space above it, or is part of an escape route, building regulations require each speaker to have a fire hood. Hoods also cut sound leaking into the room above.
Need speaker cable?
Allow about 10m per speaker for a typical run back to the amplifier. Webro 16/2 LSZH (low smoke, zero halogen) is the right cable for runs in ceilings and walls.
The Monitor Audio AWC280 is an 8" all-weather ceiling speaker built for spaces where moisture, temperature swings and UV exposure would normally rule out a standard in-ceiling speaker. Think bathrooms, saunas, spas, covered terraces and poolside installations where you still want genuine hi-fi performance overhead.

Installation notes
The AWC280 requires a 247mm cut-out and has a mounting depth of 97.55mm, so check joist spacing and ceiling void clearance before fitting. Tri-Grip dog-leg fixings clamp securely to the ceiling plasterboard, and gold-plated push terminals make cable connection straightforward. Given its 100W power handling and 8 ohm impedance, the AWC280 pairs well with a robust multi-room amplifier such as a Sonos Amp or a WiiM Amp Pro for streaming background music into bathrooms or outdoor-covered areas.

Questions we get asked
Does it come with a grille?
Yes. Every ceiling and in-wall speaker we sell comes with its grille in the box. Manufacturer photos often show the speaker with the grille removed so you can see the drivers, but the grille is always included.
Will it fit my ceiling?
You'll need a 247mm cut-out and at least 98mm of depth behind the ceiling surface. The visible trim is 285mm across. Standard plasterboard ceilings with joists are usually fine; check for pipes, cables and insulation before cutting. Not sure? Send us a photo or plan and we'll check it for you.
Do I need an amplifier?
Yes. These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier or AV receiver to drive them. They're rated at 8Ω with 20–100W recommended amplifier power. For most rooms a Sonos Amp or WiiM Amp is ideal: each drives a pair and streams from your phone. You can also buy a package with the amp included and save 5%.
Do I need a fire hood?
If there's a habitable room above (for example a bedroom), or the ceiling forms part of a fire escape route, Building Regulations require each speaker to be fire-rated, usually with a fire hood fitted over the back. How many speakers do I need?
As a rule of thumb: a pair for most bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms up to about 20m², two pairs for large open-plan spaces, and a single stereo speaker (T2 / stereo models) for small rooms like en-suites. For home cinema, use 5 or 7 speakers plus a subwoofer. Our free design service will plan positions and sizes from your floorplan.
