You'll need an amplifier

These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier to power them (8Ω, 20–50W recommended). Either of these will drive a pair and stream music from your phone.

Fitting at first fix?

Optional: the WBIV140 pre-construction bracket marks and holds the speaker position before the plasterboard goes up.

Need speaker cable?

Allow about 10m per speaker for a typical run back to the amplifier. Webro 16/2 LSZH (low smoke, zero halogen) is the right cable for runs in ceilings and walls.

The Monitor Audio IV140 is an invisible in-wall and in-ceiling speaker designed to be fully plastered over, leaving no visible grille or speaker face once finished. It is suited to rooms where a completely seamless, unobtrusive wall or ceiling finish is the priority, such as living spaces, hallways or feature walls where conventional grilles are undesirable.

Why we like it

  • Fits into conventional 4" stud bays and disappears entirely once skimmed with plaster, paint, light wallpaper or fabric
  • Two-way design with one low-frequency transducer and two high-frequency transducers for punchy bass and a wide, crystal-clear frequency range
  • Integrated crossover delivers smoother overall balance and character
  • Rigid MDF back box isolates sound and minimises leakage into adjoining rooms
  • Automatic re-setting PTC circuit breakers protect against overload and allow the system to cool before resuming normal operation

Installation notes

The IV140 is fixed in place with self-tapping screws and connects via gold-plated sprung push-type terminals. It is built around a 9mm MDF construction with an integrated back box, and requires a cut-out of 591 x 350.5mm within a standard 4" stud bay, with a mounting depth of 94mm and an overall depth (including grille) of 106mm. An optional WBIV140 pre-construction bracket is available separately for installations where the speaker position needs to be set before the wall or ceiling is finished. The nominal impedance is 8 ohms, with a recommended amplifier output of 20-50W (full range) or up to 100W when used with a minimum 80Hz high-pass filter.

Questions we get asked

Does it come with a grille?
Yes. Every ceiling and in-wall speaker we sell comes with its grille in the box. Manufacturer photos often show the speaker with the grille removed so you can see the drivers, but the grille is always included.
Will it fit my wall?
You'll need at least 94mm of depth behind the wall surface. Standard plasterboard ceilings with joists are usually fine; check for pipes, cables and insulation before cutting. Not sure? Send us a photo or plan and we'll check it for you.
Do I need an amplifier?
Yes. These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier or AV receiver to drive them. They're rated at 8Ω with 20–50W recommended amplifier power. For most rooms a Sonos Amp or WiiM Amp is ideal: each drives a pair and streams from your phone. You can also buy a package with the amp included and save 5%.
How many speakers do I need?
As a rule of thumb: a pair for most bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms up to about 20m², two pairs for large open-plan spaces, and a single stereo speaker (T2 / stereo models) for small rooms like en-suites. For home cinema, use 5 or 7 speakers plus a subwoofer. Our free design service will plan positions and sizes from your floorplan.
Is it sold singly or as a pair?
Priced per speaker. Add the quantity you need; most rooms use a pair.
When will it arrive?
Orders placed by 1pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day. Standard tracked delivery is £7.99, or free on orders over £50; next working day delivery is £11.99. Delivery details.
Can I return it?
Yes. Unused items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, and every product carries the full manufacturer warranty. Returns & warranty.
