You'll need an amplifier
These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier to power them (8Ω). Either of these will drive a pair and stream music from your phone.
Need speaker cable?
Outdoor runs need burial-grade cable. Allow about 10m per speaker for the pair. QED QX16/2 PE has a water and UV resistant jacket and can be buried without conduit.
The Sonos Architectural by Sonance 6.5" Outdoor Speakers are a pair of passive, surface-mount speakers engineered for year-round use outdoors, making them ideal for gardens, patios and terraces. They are optimised for use with a Sonos Amp but will also work as a conventional 8 ohm passive speaker with any suitable amplifier.
Why we like it
- IP66-rated dustproof and weatherproof construction, built to Mil Spec 810 for humidity, salt spray, temperature and UV exposure
- High-excursion pivoting woofer paired with a one-inch tweeter for rich mid/low frequencies and crisp highs
- Optimise Speakers tuning via the Sonos app when paired with Sonos Amp, applying custom DSP for a more even frequency response
- Wide operating temperature range from -25°C to 65°C, suited to outdoor installation in varied UK weather
- Supplied with FastMount brackets, speaker grilles and wiring terminal covers for a tidy surface-mount finish
Installation notes
These are surface-mount outdoor speakers rather than in-ceiling or in-wall models, so no cut-out or mounting depth applies. Each speaker has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and a power handling range of 5 to 130 watts, and is designed to be optimised for use with a Sonos Amp, though it can also be driven by any suitable passive amplifier using 16AWG or larger speaker wire.

Questions we get asked
Do I need an amplifier?
Yes. These are passive speakers, so they need an amplifier or AV receiver to drive them. They're rated at 8Ω with 130W recommended amplifier power. For most rooms a Sonos Amp or WiiM Amp is ideal: each drives a pair and streams from your phone. You can also buy a package with the amp included and save 5%.
How many speakers do I need?
As a rule of thumb: a pair for most bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms up to about 20m², two pairs for large open-plan spaces, and a single stereo speaker (T2 / stereo models) for small rooms like en-suites. For home cinema, use 5 or 7 speakers plus a subwoofer. Our free design service will plan positions and sizes from your floorplan.
Is it sold singly or as a pair?
